Cage is Stage Stage is Cage Exhibition
February 11 - 26, 2017
Supported by the HKETO in Singapore, the opening of the exhibition Cage is Stage Stage is Cage curated by Hong Kong renowned experimental art pioneer Danny Yung was held at DECK, Singapore on February 10, 2017 (Friday).
The exhibition, showcasing the work of more than 50 artists from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, U.S. and Europe attracted more than a thousand visitors between February 11 and 26.
The origin of the Cage is Stage Stage is Cage concept dates back to 2007. Experimental art pioneer Danny Yung came across in a local floral market a traditional Chinese bug box made of red wood with the size of a matchbox. The tiny well-constructed box is used to house small singing bug. Yung was then much inspired by this craft and the concept of how an “artist” captured and performed in such an enclosed cage/stage. He then invited 50 friends of diverse backgrounds to join him in the project. His friends used the given wooden boxes as stages/cages to house their thoughts and expressions and each of the boxes has its own artistic statement to signify a chapter of the artist’s life.
The launch of the exhibition was greeted with a warm welcome, with more than 80 distinguished guests from the diplomatic circle and the arts scene participating.
The art pieces, intricate in design, spark conversation and curiosity as visitors stare into significant parts of the artists’ lives.
The exhibition was viewed by a wide range of visitors in February at DECK, Singapore. It not only sparked intellectual discussions with close friends but also initiated conversations with the general public.
