“Beyond: Really Love You The Musical” in Singapore

With the sponsorship of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Singapore, “Beyond: Really Love You The Musical” made its overseas debut in Drama Centre, Singapore on April 18, 2019. Produced by Hong Kong’s Spring-Time Experimental Theatre, the musical attracted more than 1,000 audience to their two performances on April 18 and 19, showcasing Hong Kong’s multi-talented artists and its soft power in performing arts.
The HKETO in Singapore invited 200 guests from the diplomatic, government, business, academic and media sectors to the first showing of musical and pre-show reception. The guests enjoyed a reminiscent evening of songs and performance to pay tribute to Hong Kong’s legendary band Beyond, who are widely considered as the most successful and influential Cantopop band from Hong Kong in1980s and 1990s. Their popularity spread from Hong Kong to Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Mainland China, and overseas Chinese communities. Some 30 songs of Beyond were performed in the musical which presented the sweet and bitter paths of four young musicians in the fight for success in their music career.
Speaking at the pre-show reception, the Acting Director of HKETO in Singapore, Mr Eric Lee, said Cantopop was an important component of Hong Kong’s local culture and he was fascinated to see how pop culture has brought people together. He particularly appreciated the contribution of Hong Kong’s arts groups in promoting cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and other countries. He was also delighted that the producer of the musical, Mr Clifton Ko, held a fruitful sharing session with some 30 students from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts on his theatrical experience. Mr Lee added that to demonstrate the vibrancy and excellence of Hong Kong’s arts and cultural sector, the HKETO in Singapore would endeavor to connect Hong Kong’s arts groups of various genres to the local arts circles and audience in the region.
