Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation
November 20 - 24, 2024
The annual Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation (“HKFGP”) (香港電影巡禮) returned to Singapore in late November, which presented eight Hong Kong films of varied genres ranging from drama, thriller to comedy and action. This major film event was made possible with the financial support of Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency, Film Development Fund and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Singapore.
Presented by Asian Film Awards Academy in collaboration with Singapore Film Society, HKFGP kickstarted with the highly acclaimed opening film “The Last Dance”. Some 300 cinephiles were captivated by the two-hour film which delved into Hong Kong’s funeral industry, exploring themes of life, death, and complex people relationships. Director Anselm Chan shared with the audience in the post-screening Q&A his messages carried in the film and his intriguing interaction with the actors and crew during the production journey.
The film event has also treated the Singapore audience seven other popular Hong Kong films, namely “YUM Investigation”, “Stuntman”, “Remember What I Forgot”, “Long Arm Of The Law”, “Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In”, “Love Lies” and “Peg O’ My Heart”, many of which were Singapore premieres. Director Dickson Leung of “YUM Investigation”, Director Herbert Leung and screenwriter Anastasia Tsang of “Stuntman” also connected with Singapore’s film enthusiasts with inspiring dialogues after the film screenings.
Besides showcasing the creativity and talent of these young filmmakers from Hong Kong, the HKFGP has also arranged media interviews, visits and a sharing session with students from LASALLE College of the Arts for them to discuss their aspirations, challenges and opportunities in Hong Kong’s film production.
The Hong Kong SAR Government has over the years provided vigorous support for the Hong Kong film industry along four strategic directions, namely nurturing talent, enhancing local production, expanding markets and building the audience. Among the many policy initiatives, the Film Financing Scheme for Mainland Market and the Hong Kong‑Europe‑Asian Film Collaboration Funding Scheme will be launched to facilitate the Hong Kong cinema to thrive further and shine in global markets.
